Greek mythology is defined as a body of stories concerning the gods, heroes, and rituals of the ancient Greeks. Greek myths were created to explain the environment in which humans live. They are also connected to religion and historical events. The myths began around 2000 B.C. when the Greeks became the first Western civilization; by around 700 B.C. Greek mythology was fully developed. Around 700 B.C. three myths, Theogony by the poet Hesiod and the Iliad and the Odyssey by the poet Homer, were written. In the ancient greek poem Iliad, it tells the story of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. The Greek warrior Achilles is best known for his “Achilles Heel.” Achilles was the bravest, most handsome, and greatest warrior in the Army of Agamemnon. He is the son of Peleus, a descendant of Zeus. He was the youngest of seven sons born to Peleus and Thetis. Achilles was made immortal by being placed in the fire at night to destroy his mortal parts, “Some say Achilles entire body had been made invulnerable by the ministrations of his mother, except for one ankle-bone which had been scorched but not burned.” Little did Achilles know, that ankle would be his greatest weakness. The story of the great Achilles begins in the 12th or 13th century B.C. near modern day Çanakkale, Turkey. At a young age Achilles excelled at everything he did. “He was so swift at foot and had such courage that at age six he overtook and subdued wild animals.” When he grew older Achilles killed many of Apollo’s sons, despite the fact that he had been warned by his mother that if he did so “he would die by Apollo’s hand.” Achilles knew if he went to fight at Troy that he would die young but with glory as his mother had told him. Having slain the Ethiopian king Memnon and the Amazon Penthesilea, Achilles himself was slain in battle by Priam’s son Paris , who shot him in his mortal heal with an arrow guided by Apollo. The great warrior Achilles has been featured in many books and movies. One of the most popular is the movie Troy which is based on Homer’s “Iliad.” The film portrays the battle between the kingdoms Troy and Sparta. Achilles leads his Myrmidons along with the rest of the Greek army invading the historical city of Troy, defended by Hector’s Trojan army. With eternal glory and stories passed from generation to generation about the great warrior Achilles, it provides him with a type or immortality. Even if he does die in war, his name and and everything he stood for will always be remembered.Achilles is one of the great heroes in greek mythology. Achilles was extremely strong, courageous and loyal, but he had one weak spot, his “Achilles heel”. Paris managed to kill the great Achilles with an arrow that pierced his vulnerable heel. Although Greek myths were written hundreds if not thousands of years ago, they are still valued in society today because of the lessons they teach. One of the lessons that can be learned from the character Achilles in the ancient Greek myths is, that all individuals have weakness. Greek myths, after thousands of years, are still relevant today. They may even be relevant hundreds of years from now.
