Over the past few years,
drones technology are immediately growing in reputation eventhough they still
in the infancy phase in terms of mass adoption and usage. Drones or known as called
by a few others name such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Flying Mini Robots
or Miniature Pilotless Aircrafts have become essential to the functions of various
businesses, governmental organizations and industries (Joshi, 2017).
Drones have been so convincing to be highly beneficial in
areas where man cannot reach or is unable to perform in a timely and efficient
manner, from quick deliveries at rush hour to examine an unreachable risky area. It increasing task efficiency and
productivity, decreasing workload, risk and production costs, improving accuracy
and resolving security issues on a broad scale.Whether drones are controlled by
a remote control or via mobile devices app, they have the capability of
reaching the most remote area with little to no manpower needed and require the
least amount of effort, time and energy.
Drone Technology History
A drone, in a technological
context, is an unmanned aircraft. There are more formally known as unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs) or unmanned aircraft systems (UASes). As we known drone
is a flying robot because the aircrafts may be remotely controlled or can fly
autonomously through software-controlled flight plans in their embedded systems
working in conjunction with onboard sensors and GPS.
Drones have been around for more than two decades, but
their roots date back to World War I when both The U.S. and France worked on
developing automatic, unmanned airplanes. However, the last few years have been
significant in terms of drone adoption, usage expansion across industries and
global awareness which include aerial photography, express delivery,
information gathering, rescue operations, geographic mapping, safety
inspections and others.
Drones for S.A.R. Operation
A search and rescue drone is
an unmanned aircraft used by emergency services, such as police officers,
firefighters or rescue teams. Its ideal for searching over vast areas for
missing persons, and crime victims in need of rescue in any environment. Drones
also can provide real-time visual information and data in the aftermath of
natural disaster such as flood and earthquake. They can become an eye in the
sky to locate a lost person or disaster location even in the most remote area.
Thus, search and rescue operations can greatly benefit from the use of drones
to surver the environment and collect evidences about disasters and accidents.
However, there is some fundemental need to be accounted in using the technology
such as quality of sensory data collected, drones energy limitation,
eviromental hazard and level of information exchange.
S.A.R. Operation in Malaysia
Nowdays, UAVs was baned some
area such as airport, military camp, private area and public or crowd. They
baned for that area because some pilot remotely UAVs harmful and causing injury
to the public.
That’s a disadvantages for UAVs for nation but for
advantages side is used for surveillance. Why is can be a surveillance because
some cases such as landslide rescurer can used UAVs for search prey who have
trap or still life. They are not waste time to find as manually and reducing
the risk of accidental rescue.
Besides that, some cases been happend in Malaysia is the
helicopter crashed. According to Berita Harian (2007), Nuri helicopter
belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force with six members crashed near
Genting Sempah Tunnel, Genting Highlands, Pahang on Friday, July 13, 2007 while
traveling from Sungai Besi Airport to Kuantan Air Base, Pahang. Sikorsky’s
helicopter was reported missing at 9.15am, about 10 minutes after departure. A
mission searching and rescue victims took a long time because recurer can find
that area and due requiring command services.
Natural disaster like Sabah earthquake in 2015 which
struck the area of Mount Kinabalu and cause of 18 death and other 137 people
stranded on the mount. Save and recsue operation were also delayed because of
the damage and casualites cause by the earthquake, UAVs technology can be
benefited on this kind of situation in order to save people life. The same
situation happened in other disaster which occur more in our country such as
landslide and flood.
For facilitate rescure, this UAVs must to used find a
victims and which area must to rescure. Goverment need to think a benifits of
UAVs for a safety of the people and the savior to reduce energy wastage in a
mission. In addition, we know December is a monsoon season some areas such as
east and north coast states often flooded. Nowdays has recently been shocked by
the Penang that floods were hit by severe floods until the city was flooded.
Some rescure were unable to enter the floodplain due to
the breakdown of entry points due to high water levels. They had to use a boat
and took a long time to channel their help. When UAVs used for that mission
rescurer can directly find which area have victims who are still trapped.

Benefits of Drone in S.A.R Operation
There a lot of factor can be
benefited from UAVs use in SAR operation and this advantages can be use to
improve the effeciency of the operation. Thus, here are the main factors which
influenced by the drone technology and can be benefited by the teams of SAR.
Ahead of the UAVs
deployment, mapping provide a significant added value since it helped the teams
understand the response environmental context much better. However, it was
almost unrealistic to expect that high resolution maps could be produced when
work in emergency situation which the teams need to done their job remotely and
wirelessly. Less but not least, they can be prepared any possibility to the
disaster and risk reduction activities which the SAR team need to respond
For search and rescue teams
that often means having difficult decisions, such as where to look first and
what risks to accept for themselves while responding to an emergency. In the
situation of emergency, the SAR team also expose to risk of the disaster and
hazard. Thus, UAVs can help the teams in making decision in order to reduce the
risk exposed to them and the victims itself. During search and resue
operations, time is critical. Injured survivirs of a disaster might be trapped,
and finfing them quickly can literally be a question of life and death. Effective
decision making also can improve the performance and reduce the time taken to
execute the operation by overseeing the environment situation.
In conclusion, UAVs can help
Malaysia for national security asspecially surveillance in difficult cases. In
era of technology UAVs not be dangerous as long as it is not misused. For my
oppinion National Transformation 50 (TN50) was have announce by Prime Minister
Dato Seri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak must have a plan for UAVs system for a nation
it’s not a wasteful investment but a smart investment for
helping developing countres move forward. I hope Malaysia Goverment think of
the use of these UAVs in national security for future.
